As in previous years, the host state of the Day of German Unity<\/em> invited not only political representatives but also citizens from all federal states to celebrate this important national occasion together. Each state chancery selected eight participants \u2013 including the delegation from Bavaria, which took part in the official celebrations held in Saarland. It was an outstanding honor that our CEO was invited to be a part of it and to represent Bavaria’s focus on this year’s slogan “Future by Change”. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

A Glimpse into the Future at the German Research Center for Artificial Intelligence<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The Bavarian delegation arrived on Wednesday and visited the German Research Center for Artificial Intelligence (DFKI) at Saarland University, where they gained fascinating insights into ongoing research projects. The range of innovations presented included 3D-printed medical implants and \u201csmart\u201d retail shelves capable of displaying additional information and enabling product comparisons.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the evening, Saarland\u2019s Minister President Anke Rehlinger hosted the guests at the historic industrial venue \u201cAlte Schmelz.\u201d The minister took the time to personally engage with each state delegation, showing great interest in their backgrounds and experiences. Participants noted the exceptional warmth and hospitality of the people of Saarland, who welcomed them with open arms in every setting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Industrial Heritage and Regional Identity<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The second day began with a visit to the V\u00f6lklingen Ironworks, a massive industrial site built in the late 19th century that once employed over 17,000 people. Designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1994, the complex stands as a symbol of the region\u2019s deep industrial roots and cultural identity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the \u201cBlower Hall\u201d of the ironworks, Saarland\u2019s State Parliament President Heike Winzent welcomed the delegation and emphasized the enduring importance of community, work, and tradition\u2014her speech concluding with the traditional miners\u2019 greeting \u201cGl\u00fcck auf!\u201d, reflecting pride and respect for generations past.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the afternoon, the delegation visited the renowned company Villeroy & Boch<\/em> in Mettlach, where they were given an in-depth tour highlighting the long and diverse history of the Saar region\u2014shaped by its unique border location and strong ties to neighboring countries. Even after the 1956 referendum, in which the Saarland voted to join the Federal Republic of Germany\u2014an early \u201creunification in miniature\u201d\u2014its connection to France has remained remarkably close.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Later, the group enjoyed a visit to the scenic Saar Loop (Saarschleife<\/em>), one of the region\u2019s most famous natural landmarks, before being welcomed in the evening by Saarbr\u00fccken\u2019s Mayor Uwe Conradt at the Ludwigspark Stadium.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Celebrations of the Day of German Unity<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The official celebrations began on Friday with an inspiring ecumenical service held in Saarbr\u00fccken\u2019s historic Ludwigskirche. The central state ceremony followed at the Saarbr\u00fccken Congress Hall, featuring speeches by Minister President Anke Rehlinger, Federal Chancellor Friedrich Merz, and French President Emmanuel Macron. The atmosphere during the event was deeply moving\u2014culminating in the joint singing of the German and European anthems, which left a lasting impression on all attendees.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

During the subsequent reception, delegates had the opportunity to converse personally with a number of distinguished guests from politics and public administration. Karolina Gernbauer, Head of the Bavarian State Chancellery, and Bundestag President Julia Kl\u00f6ckner engaged in thoughtful discussions with members of the Bavarian delegation on topics such as homeland, identity, and technological innovation. Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier and his wife Elke B\u00fcdenbender also took time to greet and speak warmly with the guests.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Thanks and Conclusion<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Members of the Bavarian citizen delegation expressed deep gratitude for the outstanding organization, the warm hospitality of the Saarland hosts, and the numerous enriching encounters and insights into culture, history, and future technologies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
